Welcome to the 'Times of our Lives’

Brightlingsea is a small town with a big history! Our museum, founded by Alf Wakeling in 1989, has taken on a new lease of life. Moving to new premises on Station Road allowed us to create a brand new museum from scratch. Today we think we rank amongst the best local museums in the country. Whether you drop in for half an hour or half a day, there is plenty to explore, engage and excite you, whatever your age or interests. So pop along and maybe you'll have the Time of your Life' too!

We thank you for your support and we hope you enjoy your visit.

For everyone!

Brightlingsea Museum has something for visitors of all ages and interests. We don’t like to give too much away, but based upon recent feedback we think you will be amazed! The displays are designed with a surprise around every corner and with lots of things to do. When Covid restrictions allow we look forward to welcoming schools and groups (by prior arrangement).

A grand day out!

Why not make a day of it!
With its beach, lido and promenade together with many cafés, pubs and shops, visiting Brightlingsea is a wonderful day at the seaside! Brand new for 2021, we offer two exciting new trails - the Bricklesey Mouse Museum Trail for our younger visitors, and the Town Heritage Trail for families and adults. Both are available to collect at the museum, although we do ask for a small donation.

Window on our world!

As local people will testify, Brightlingsea Museum is becoming famous for its window displays! Just because lockdown has prevented us from welcoming visitors inside, it doesn't mean that we've been idle. Designed by our talented volunteer Gill, new themed displays have been appearing regularly to delight passers-by. In fact, our Christmas display won the town prize for ‘Best Window’. So be sure to take a look next time you pass!
