Brightlingsea 1870's to 1970's

 

Population in 1871: 3075

 

1871: John Bateman arrives, buying Moverons, Rectory Hall and Lodge Farms.


1872: Rev Arthur Pertwee is appointed to the Parish of Brightlingsea.


1873: Colne Yacht Club is established.


1874: There are 200 Brightlingsea men licensed to dredge for Native oysters There were 200 fishing smacks working out of the town.

Restoration of All Saints Chancel, West Gallery, tower arch and west window, paid for by T Nevinson of Leicester.


1876: New Church Schoolroom opened (The National School was already here, established in 1846 and the Wesleyan School in 1861).


1877: William Pannell came to Brightlingsea, initially for a holiday, but buys Harvey’s Hall (now the Spar) and turns it into the first of his businesses in the town.


1878: Further restoration of All Saints, paid for by public subscription
